In the attached paper the corresponding sentences are even highlighted in yellow: the possible mechanism is the interaction of both MMT and CNT with sodium cation. This seems to be a very labile physical "cross-link". If you need more detailed explanation, from the paper introduction I conclude that it might be found in Refs. 20, 21 of the attached paper.
