I have worked on TCP, WSNs, MANETs and VANETs. In general I would say

1. Complicated - Modifying the underlying protocol and writing your own algorithms

2. Time consuming - Large scale simulations involving hundreds of nodes

I think creation or simulation of a wireless network in NS 2 is very tedious, instead of NS2 u can use Caulnet simulator.

I am working in MANET.

if you wanted to adaptive or modify any protocol in MANET, you need more time to get new result for new protocol. After that, you need to  compare your result with old protocol. Some time , The network simulation is boring
