I am on a short deadline and need to learn how to use spss. The program is very large and I am unsure where I should spend my time the most.

This is what I have so far on my list to learn. Is something on this list wrong? What else would you add to it, I rather learn to much then to little.

comparisons n a short deadline. It is very important to be able to:
1) bring in data (from a csv file, or Excel etc).
2) Use simple exploratory functions to examine the data. (means, medians, totals and distributions, such as a simple plot to see whether data is skewed or normal for numeric data)
3) For categories, look at categories or groups. validate all the data, . In categories or factors you should get them named appropriately, make groups (if you need to ) with non-overlapping categories. At this stage you can re-code variables or collapse categories into new variables.
4) You should be able to plot and look at the data visually.
5) Next in relation to your study/experiment research questions you may look at
comparisons (t tests or one way ANOVA). If your design is a Factorial ANOVA then the design should reflect this, and then you can use SPSS to set up the model.
6) So at this stage it is more about what you need to do from the discipline rather than learning all SPSS has in it!
If you are using a regression model approach you may need to look at the effect of measured variables (sex, age, intervention etc on an outcome)
If you have repeated measurements over time, you will have to take into account this as well.
So start simple, and then work out what methods you will be using and learn those.
I have taught statistics for many years. Most students do not realise how much time it takes to get the dat in and ready for analysis. So do not despair if it is a slow start.
You may also consider Factor Analysis (Analyze->Dimension Reduction->Factor...) and measurements reliability test (Analyze-> Scale->Reliability Analysis) since you probably work with some latent psychological constructs.
