Generally, there are two techniques for managing waste and household waste: modern processes and conventional processes.

Conventional techniques are traditional household waste management techniques in which unsuitable and uncontrolled methods are used to dispose of household waste. These methods are illegal dumping, incineration, uncontrolled landfilling and dumping of garbage in unpaired places.

Besides conventional household waste management processes, there are modern processes aimed at recovering raw materials or enabling recovery of waste. Here, waste is not considered as debris to be disposed of but rather as a raw material or as a resource to be recovered.

Among these processes, we can note:

- The controlled landfill is the simplest and often most economical process since the approach costs are limited. It is the most widely used process in many countries for household and certain industrial waste;

- The production of storable solid fuel, in the form of granules or bottles and which can be used moderately with some adaptations;

- The recovery of methane produced by anaerobic fermentation of waste, either in controlled landfills or in special enclosures.

Apart from the aforementioned modern methods, there are also other modern refuse treatment methods, these are:

> Incineration: a technique that burns waste to transform it. By this process, the organic matter is completely destroyed, which allows a considerable reduction in the volume of waste. The heat produced can be used as heating sources for buildings, greenhouses or other purposes;

> Safe burial: the waste is disposed of in successive layers of around 2m thick using special graders. Between two layers of waste, spread a layer of soil 15 cm to 30 cm thick. The bacteria in the earth will degrade the organic detritus that had been borrowed from it. In addition to being an ecological recycling process, its strict regulations make it a very acceptable solution from an economic point of view. This process should not be used for toxic or non-biodegradable waste;

> Composting: technique which consists of rapidly fermenting fermentable products contained in urban waste. The result is a compost used mainly to enrich agricultural land as organic fertilizer, it also has an ecological advantage. However, this process requires separation of the waste;

> Mixed processing: here there is a combination of these three previous processes. This combination can be in various ways: incineration and safe burial, composting and incineration.

In developing countries MSW management is an alarming issue.
