When high speed camera and schlieren phtography is not available, what are the possible methods that one can use for recording initiation of combustion? We can use photodiodes with a small quartz window in the combustion chamber, we can use simple pressure transducers. Is there any other cost-effective method can be used?
As you told, the use of pressure transducers or photodiodes would be the most evident one - I have used pressure transducers for detection ignition in car engines.
Another mean is the ion current measurement in the cone calorimeter. I have never used the technology, but here you find a good description of it:

Use a radiometer (photodiodes) to measure radiation output. These things can respond pretty fast (milliseconds). See,

When there is the presence of a flame, there is also UV / IR energy emission. There are sensors that use mainly UV wavelength associated with a small electronic circuit which indicate the presence or absence of flame. Are widely used as security systems to large ovens and are of very low cost. The electronic signals can start acquiring data in microseconds.
There are many methods for determining the start of combustion that use in-cylinder pressure. Most of them require differentiation, which can be problematic if you have noisy data (or in some cases cross-talk from injector signals). I published a paper detailing a method of determining the start of combustion using a band-pass filtered pressure signal that is easy enough to implement if you are not scared away by the initial bit of maths involved -- implementation doesn't really require complete understanding and there are other ways of isolating the start of combustion from this filtered signal than the one I showed in this paper.
