There are lot of places where cut downs are implemented. Our Universities have stopped giving non-salary grants to colleges. We save on having research gatherings in colleges, not in conference halls in hotels. Paperless office work is also aimed at saving paper.

Cost-saving measures within bounds are perhaps not so worrisome - what really is a deep concern is the attitude that the crisis seems to foster in certain quarters towards abandoning fundamental research programmes in favor of more immediately utilitarian, applied research.

Dear Jaya, I found that I couldn't practice 'Paperless office work'. Because the auditors wanted both softcopies and hardcopies, when my documents were audited.

@ Miranda, what you say is true in some places but many offices now are striving towards paperless offices. Besides, our leave travel concessions, conference grants have been cut down!

Particularly in my country ( Argentina ) , there is now a strong and large state with considerable support to the most disadvantaged sectors of the economy. This results in higher domestic market, which has grown to the level of the rate of population growth .

In this context they were created new national universities in different regions to ensure access to higher education for lower income social sectors .

That is, in almost all dimensions, has increased public spending. Pensioners receive higher incomes . Unemployment insurance and guarantees of family survival , allowed to develop a broader domestic market.

Automakers with production in Argentina (VW, FIAT, FORD, CHEVROLET, TOYOTA, NISSAN, RENAULT, PEUGEOT, etc.) Have experienced the largest growth market in its history .

In Argentina , there is no automotive worker who does not have a car kilometer zero of higher gammas.

In short , there is not too many consequences of global economic problem.

@Jaya, my colleagues and I wanted to do paperless work. Everything was in our PCs. But we had to print out hardcopies for auditing, as I described on this link.

Congrats Prof Kamal and to friends at Hashemite Univ. This is the first time on this thread where I am hearing of better/ bigger research budget. I hope that it will lead to ground breaking research. [ I missed Prof Abdalla's input on RG threads for several days.]

Dear All, Lijo Francis, Patrick Low and others that you know are not able any longer to log in their RG account from yesterday. RG suspended their accounts without any reason. I don't know why, but I find this an outstanding abuse. Please help them and inform all other participants as this is a signal that things are not going in the right way in RG before it happens to you!

Dear All, In my University the actions taken to account for the economic downturn have been:

1. reduction of the funds to organize seminars and conferences at a Departmental level

2. reductions of research funds awarded

3. reduction of the amount of resources dedicated to journal and books acquisition.
