Efficiency in statistical software operations through data computation, analysis, interpretation and correct reporting can help to achieve increased confidence in research results. This efficiency requires competency in statistical software operations. Reduced statistical software anxiety, high statistical software self-efficacy, knowledge and skills are major components of statistical software operations which some researchers possess and others do not.
I would go back to university education. Many students are not interested or think they don't need it, they will do their science in a different way. This is also a difficulty for teachers of statistical programs such as SPSS, so they often lower the standard. I try to help this (as an SPSS teacher) by trying to work with students on real databases straight away, so that it is an good experience when they find something new themselves. I admit I learned a lot of things after university from videos, internet etc, when I saw what I needed and at what level. At university, students don't foresee this and so they are not so motivated.
While there are many reasons for this, I'd like to mention what Andy Field, perhaps the most popular author in the context of SPSS said. He said that during his college days he didn't particularly enjoy statistics because it was taught in a dry and boring manner.
I agree with this. In fact, when statistics is taught without proper real-world examples, the students may feel that there is no real use to it. This is why the teaching pedagogy must be different and must actively involve the students.
