Istanbul as a mega city has very complex city dynamics. Its population has been dramatically increasing during the last decades. I am interested in the major public characteristics and urban context factors having impacts on the population increase and urban sprawl.
Can you please share your ideas and contributions on the topics of population growth and key topics pertinent such as; migration issue, inner-city re-urbanization strategies and policies, impact of building new infrastructure on population growth, etc.?
The growth of a city apart from natural growth has migration as the main cause of increase in population along with the floating population due to tourism, employment opportunities, etc. Availability and standard of social and physical infrastructure, employment prospects as well as climate act as magnet for growth of the city. The city center, Central Business Districts act as nodes. The sprawl is commonly seen in the direction of economic growth, and level of communication with the neighbouring cities or towns. Unplanned growth however increases the pressure on the budding areas, which due to lack of water supply and sewage facilities, poor road network and communication, leads to formation of slums in many cases.
- There are different factors responsible on population and urban sprawl such as:
1. Rural-urban migration.
2. Increased household income.
3. Topographic factors such as : slope, soil, elevation, and so on.
4. Economic aspect.
5. Unbalanced Spatial development.
6. Regional Development.
7. Nature resources.
8. Urban planning policies.
9. Social aspects such as poverty.
10. Focusing on horizontal growth rather than vertical growth
"What are the main factors impacting on population growth and urban sprawl in megacities?"
I think this question should be addressed in two parts. First, the main driver of population growth in one area is definitely due to the improved or increased physical development and economic activities in that area. People tends to move to an area that deemed to be able to enhance their quality of life (be it the better job opportunity or education). As such, the respective area becomes denser.
With increasing immigration or natural growth in that area, its quality of life starts to degrade. That area becomes too dense and the price of land increases. Moreover, there is a lack of necessary infrastructure to support the densities that occurred. Once this happened, people started to move outside of that area for their housing. In this way, suburbs formed, and land close to cities becomes valuable.
So, from my point of view, quality of life and population density are the two key drivers that contributing to both the population growth and urban sprawl, respectively.

Regarding the population growth Chee hung Foo resumed it quite well.
Regarding urban sprawl, there are multiple factors that vary according to each context. Nevertheless, according to researchers the main and most common drivers are economic and population growth, increase of income and lack of spatial planning or failure to apply it.
These are a bit generic and of course there other factors, such transportation infrastructures or cultural factors, however these are more dependent of the context (time and space) of the case study. For instance, the initial modern sprawled areas (mostly in the USA in the 19th century) were structured around railway stations. Nowadays, most of it are structured around road infrastructures and private car.
In attach follows some publications that will help you to understand all the dynamic of urban sprawl. Special attention to the works of Ewing and the report of the EEA.
