I like this question, because at present we're more tools for evaluation processing, so some tools I think it's not differences with old tools. In my opinion, the elaboration is technique in relation of the component are systems checking in a process.

If the question is about the LCI of a product or process using existing databases, the difficulty for Mexico is that there is only the electricity mix database. In order to prepare an LCI of a product or process other databases must be adapted to simulate the Mexican reality.

Now, if the question is about the elaboration of the data base /LCI of basic processes (like the electricity mix, petrol, water), the main difficulty is the lack of measurement and monitoring in Mexico. Although there are some statistics of use and emissions these are not comparable nor public. To build an inventory requires several research lines of masters and doctorate degrees aligned to the same product, interinstitutional agreements for information access and financial support, beside other issues. Hope this is useful.

Compiling the inventory involves the capture of data, whether physical or economic. But I go beyond questioning about inventory methods.

It is true his statement. It is so automatic, to insert the data in the software of LCA, that we do not question what processes (logarithms) are involved, mainly in the quantification of the inventory.

The system boundary is the main difficulty. Arbitrary choices are needed along the all chain. Example with the energy mix of a given country: for a given product produced with electricity, shall I take the real electricity chain (say, nuclear) or the energy mix of the country, or the "main" energy source of the country ? Example with the parts of a product (say a computer): do you give an impact of each part with the same questions than above (energy mix etc) within the ultimate country of production of the part (China, or even more international ?). If the part is anonymous and international (made in different places by same multinational), say Ikea product), do you take an international average or a "main" source etc? If the part is a byproduct of a main other purpose, do you take it for nil or do you share the value ? Example: recycled or refurbished products. Other example of needed arbitrary choice: a second hand car: is it's LCA impact nil or to be retrieved from the new car ? following which formula ?
