Which one is more promising, network-assisted D2D or without network D2D communication? It's generally said that in D2D communication the two devices communicate directly using highly directional antennas keeping the out-of-band emission very low. Finally, is it related to cooperative diversity in any way?
I have to believe the answer is "it depends," as is often the case.
If the devices are far apart, a network may be essential. If the devices are in close proximity, a network may be undesirable. A current area of interest in both of these operational modes might be vehicular communications, in support of modern driver assistance or even fully autonomous driving systems.
You might want to look at IEEE 802.20:

to see an example of this vehicular standard, which supports both modes of operation.
So for example, if this advanced car must compute an optimal route to a destination, it will need to connect to a network, to obtain information about conditions throughout alternative routes to the destination. For that, the vehicle needs to communicate with an infrastructure network.
But if the vehicle is running through traffic congestion, it will need to communicate with all of the adjacent vehicles, to determine what their intentions are, whether they are fully operational or somehow incapacitated, and in general, how best to navigate through this traffic congestion in real time. For this latter function, you're in an ad-hoc network environment, where any extra infrastructure would be undesirable.
I think you can expect the same "it depends" state of affairs to apply to many other D2D scenarios, including wireless sensor networks and all the other popular D2D topics du jour.
If highly directional antennaes are involved, it looks more like connection between two fixed points to me, i.e. equivalent of leased line. Otherwise, as stated above "it depends".
