This question was asked at me by one of my students. The question is regarding the selection of appropriate statistical packages for appropriate tests of data. How much MATLAB is superior to MSEXCEL in the accuracy of complex calculations? What are the other factors one should consider in selecting a software for data analysis?
Microsoft Excel has definite possibilities for data analysis and presentation, but it is not a statistical package. It is a spreadsheet with its specific goals.
having worked with SPSS and R software for advanced statistics, I highly recommend R software, for the reason that it contains more package giving the opportunity to work in a personalized way and the most important is an open source software.

Excel has limited potential for statistical analysis, but there is a number of other software.
SPSS software is the easy and efficiency program because under the window and needs simple training, another program SAS very good but need more training.

Minitab is probably the best statistical software for students. For professionals, R, S, SAS and SSPS are commonly used and very competent.
Minitab is easier to use and also has spreadsheet-type functionality, which students should be familiar with from Excel. Excel is, of course, not a statistics program and is rather limited when it comes to data analysis, and so cannot be recommended. Also, most students will learn excel anyway for other reasons.
