Even before mass media, no one talks about sex explicitly in public because of the risk of being judged adversely by others. It is the difference between individuals, but particularly between the sexes, that makes sexuality taboo.
Mass media can shape how people see the world and behave. When people see certain ideas, images, and stories repeatedly on TV, social media, and other outlets, they start to believe and act according to those messages. For example, if the media often shows certain groups in a negative light, people might develop biases against them. It can also influence trends, like what clothes to wear or what foods to eat.
Models of absolute media power remained in the 20th century. For the 21st century, it is correct to speak of differentiated influence. It is significant for an audience of a certain age, education, social and gender status.
I agee Rohit! We have become slaves to the media unable to think unless someone tells us what we should believe. But it's all fiction based on greed and making money out of people.
The implications of mass media on social perceptions and behaviors:
Formation of Perceptions and Public Opinion: Mass media provides audiences with a specific perspective on current events and issues, influencing the formation of people's perceptions about important social, political, and cultural matters.
Influence on Behaviors and Social Norms: Mass media disseminates behavior models and values to audiences, which can influence social behaviors and norms. For example, the use of social media and influencers can create new trends and change societal norms.
Manipulation of Information and Narratives: Mass media can be used to manipulate information and promote specific narratives, thereby influencing public opinion and individual behaviors.
Reinforcement of Stereotypes and Discrimination: In some cases, mass media reinforces existing stereotypes and contributes to the spread of discrimination in society, shaping perceptions and behaviors towards certain ethnic, gender, or other groups.
Opportunities for Education and Awareness: Despite the above implications, mass media also has the potential to educate and raise awareness among the public about important social issues, promoting positive behaviors and responsibility in society.
These implications highlight the importance and impact of mass media on shaping society and cultural norms in a country, expressing and influencing people's perceptions and behaviors.
While there is widespread belief in the power of mass media, there is no clear or agreed evidence for this. This lack of clear evidence of this became apparent after much research leading up to the 1980s.
As one of the distinguished researchers in the field put it:
"The entire study of mass communication is based on the premise that there are effects from the media, yet it seems to be the issue on which there is least certainty and least agreement." (McQuail 1987:251).
I have been doing research in this and cognate fields for the last 50 years with my colleagues at the Communication Research Institute (CRI). The result of this work has been to created a new paradigm for thinking about communication. If this interests you, see our recent book on the subject:
