What are the ethical methods for rabbit sacrifice?

you can use different chemicals for your choice of experiments. we use mostly :

1. Drug : ketamine or xylazine , dose: 1-4 mg/kg , route - intra –muscular, Surgical anesthesia lasting 45 – 75 min., Muscular relaxation- Sleep time: 100 – 150 min.

2. Pentobarbitone :Light to medium plane anesthesia (20 - 30 min.) Best avoided in rabbits, due to respiratory and cardiac arrest at higher doses , Sleep time: 60 – 120 min., Dose :20 - 45 mg/kg

Indeed, you use all these chemicals cited above. If you use volatile anesthetics, it is preferable to use closed area to obtain rapid and efficient results. A mixture of xylazine and ketamine is also of high effect. After sleep, you can use decapitate easily.

Recently there is a trent to use inhalational anesthetics like isoflurane. You may feel it is more humane in that way. But ask the vet is always the easy way. Or, you may look into IACUC guidelines from NIH. Good luck.

I was astonished, not to say shocked, that you use the word "sacrifice" for what is really "killing". Because it's legal/standard/non-criminal or why?

You are technically right, the correct term would be euthanized, the act of killing in a humane, regulated , prescribed and least ethically vexing way. Why the astonishment and shock? " the animal sacrificed and the organs harvested" has a more benign ring to it instead of "the animal suffocated to death, its body slaughtered to part pieces and organs extracted by a combination of dissection and prying apart/ripping."

Diplomacy? Hypocrisy? Guilt, awkwardness or embarrassment? Whatever the case, the use of " sacrifice" is still prevalent in an article with scientific content .
