I think that mentorship is very important for students and, critical in graduate schools. However, I found that mentorship is not always a priority, perhaps due to faculty's intense workload, and graduate students often have to go through the painful 'sink or swim' process in order to learn and gain experience in their field. Mentors should be knowledgeable and, above all, caring individuals who teach students to grow and be self-reliant while being supported.

Mariela González-López , thank you for your recommended article. This social science study is interesting (and itself calls for further study). The focus of the article is on the the study of assessment of people's relationship with their parents - tied to academic mentoring. This represents one aspect of mentoring or being a student in higher education. I suspect this is a reason why we don't see these types of assessments as part of the higher education study practice across disciplines.

I wonder how these instruments might compliment the complexity of individuals' lifes to provide for insight into graduate education mentoring.

Clearly, if you compare this study with the first comment of my question, we (humankind) can split an atom, but it is not widely recognized that the most fundamental treatment of being a human is agreed upon.

Hermann Gruenwald , I apologize for taking liberty to boost soccer, I follow a team known as the 'Kickers' and your comment made me think of that. I agree with being rigorous (speaking of Mines)....the question is how to do that effectively.

Not really related to my posed question, but you mention Golden, was that a detractor? I think Golden is one of the reasons why many people want to be there....up in the foothills of the Rockies (closer than most Front Range locations to Mt. activities), just West of Denver, location of Coors (now Miller Coors), it was the largest production brewery in North America not to mention all of the offshoot companies. I imagine it was much smaller then though. The campus experienced a boom in growth that is really impressive.

Mentor-ship is very crucial to the development of pedants in nation building, therefore a mentor should exhibit a great sense of honesty and quality lifestyle devoid of awkward vices and consciously uphold diligent and working assiduously. Remember that, other innocent people and young academicians are imitating you.

I agree and concur with the mentor attributes outlined by Ibraheem Kadhom Faroun and would lie to add academic and mentorship qualification on the requirements for an academic mentor as these will ensure credibility in the mentoring relationship. Moreover, mentorship qualification ensures that evidence-based model(s) of mentoring is/are adhered to through the undertaking of mentoring.
