What are the effects of sulfites on corrosion?

I want to know that what are the effects of sulfites on corrosion of metals? are they corrosion inhibitors or accelerators?

There is a standard test method for evaluating of corrosion inhibitors,namely (Wheel Test Method Used for Evaluation of Film-Persistent Corrosion Inhibitors for Oilfield Applications. NACE 1D 182). In this procedure Oxygen has been removed by purging oxygen-free nitrogen (99.99%) in corrosion media and catalyzed sodium sulfite (Na2SO3). Sodium sulfite has an important role to scavenge any residual oxygen in media (oxygen scavenger).
