You might want to contact the (US) National Center of Deaf-Blindness and Helen Keller National Center (I was a teacher there almost 30 years ago). They might be able to direct you to current researchers in the field.

The brain is 'plastic ' so the neurons will connect to different pathways that will compensate for a lack in another area. Perhaps more connections will be in the temporal lobe instead of occipital lobe
