Yes, social media portals can be destructive for the development of children and young people if too much time is spent by children and youth on browsing sidelines media portals, and especially if the pages are not developing capacity, intellectual skills are only advertisements for different products and services.
Social media portals can be a complement to teaching and educational instruments if they are under the control of parents, guardians and teachers. If children and youth use social media portals for a specific, limited, not too long time a day and if they browse websites that contain information that supplements knowledge acquired at school then social media portals can be a complement to the educational process and can be evaluated positively.
But unfortunately, such websites and thematic subpages on social media portals are rather scarce, the majority of information is not useful for education, entertainment and advertising of products and services. Many of the thematic websites that can supplement the knowledge acquired by students in schools are outside of social media portals.
An especially unique type of social media portal is the YouTube video portal, which contains various films, different thematically and different in terms of content. Some films may supplement the school's educational process for children and adolescents. However, there are many videos that do not contain relevant content and / or advertisements for specific products and services.
The problem is that for the purposes of viral marketing, such types of videos for the YouTube portal are created that children and young people think that they are watching a presentation recorded by one of the users of the portal and in fact they are watching an advertisement aimed at redirecting to a specific online store. It is important to control what children and teenagers watch on social media sites by parents, guardians and teachers.
