We suggest in the attached figures the deformations paths for the dynamically loaded steel and concrete materials in order to get a comparison scale between these two materials when they are used in reinforced concrete.
Dynamic cyclic stresses can result in fatigue failure as the attachment shows. Here, a failed steel component in a concrete bridge deck has failed. The failure only became visible when a portion of concrete over the failure spalled off. The asphaltic concrete visible in the photo was a temporary repair of the spalled area.
