NItrocellulose is perfectly fine for Northern blotting. See Thomas, SP. 1980. PNAS 77, 5201-5205. Just be careful with formaldehyde fumes, which are carcinogenic (run gel in a hood, if possible).

Nitrocellulose is good for binding proteins, nylon gives better results when binding nucleic acids.
