I quantified microstrain and crystallite size of the prepared nanoparticles implementing W-H plot analysis. The slope of the line was negative in nature. Does the negative slope say the sample is under compressive stress? Further, I had calculated the residual stress of the same nanoparticles by evaluating lattice parameters. The residual stress showed a positive value. Based on these values (observations) how can I differentiate between negative microstrain and positive residual stress?

Remember that a micro-strain in one direction,i.e., compression, might leads to a residual stress,i.e., tension, in another direction at a nanoscale structure.

Thank you for your suggestion. What I got from your answer is negative microstrain and positive residual stress can be expected from a sample. Further, I would like to ask you that how a localized micro strain would induce total residual stress ?
