Medical laboratory science involves running clinical tests on patient samples. This requires a 2 or 4 year degree. While medical laboratory scientist play a key role in providing information for diagnosis, we do not actually diagnose people. A pathologist holds a medical degree, and thus would be more involved in making a diagnosis.
In power of Jennifer's response, based on references, it should be mentioned that pathologists should make interpretations on diseases, and in fact, they should act as mentor or advisories of doctors in differential diagnosis. but in many cases they substituted and replaced with medical laboratory science specials, and only working in technician level.
