In the context of electricity market modelling, what are the main differences between ABM and SD?
I know there are a number of general differences between these two approaches. For instance, regarding the systems containing active objects (such as people or organizations), ABM can go beyond the limitations of SD. However, I am looking for a more specific answer with regard to the characteristics of electricity market.

System Dynamics can model structures such as relationships, policies, incentives ... that underlie the behavior of systems. While the dynamics of the system admitted the essential role of personal and organizational mental models as the basis or key influencers of the structure. The difference between (SD) and (ABM) is that the first one allows to model the mental models and does not take into account the mood of the decision-makers. In Agent Modeling (ABM), however, organizations are modeled as a system of semi-autonomous decision-making parts.

Thank you for your response. As I mentioned in the question, I aim at finding efficient ways to model electricity market. I want to compare different strategies with regard to a number of objectives. According to the literature, ABM is an efficient tool in such cases. However, I do not understand why SD cannot be considered as a suitable tool for this problem.
According to the above explanation, I am interested in the aspects that can help me model different strategies and evaluate the results of those strategies with regard to multiple objectives.

Brief and concise: System Dynamics (with the main method based on Forrester diagrams) models the relations between the different key elements of the system (TOP-DOWN). MAS defines the inner behavior of the different elements and the relations and the behavior emerges (BOTTOM-UP).

Thank you very much for your response. However, according to the literature, ABM not only " defines the inner behavior of the different elements", but also " models the relations between the different key elements of the system". So, with all due respect, I think we cannot distinguish the two approaches based on your definition.
Maybe the point that Dr. Lafifi mentioned in the first answer can be considered as the main difference between the two simulation approaches. But if we accept that definition, it means that ABM is a more comprehensive framework which can make SD obsolete. Nevertheless, since SD is still being widely used by the scholars, It is fair to conclude that there is more to discuss about the differences between ABM and SD.

In ABM you do not define the relations or the global behavior of the system, but the behavior of the individual entities, the relations emerges (is a nice example of emergent modelling). Other think is if you want to do an hybrid approach (as is done commonly) and define, over the behavior of the agents, some relations.
Both approaches are powerful, depending for what; at least, a model is just a tool useful to solve an specific problem.

As Pau said, The main difference is the modeling approach. SD generally use a aggregated Top-Down approach while ABM use highly dissaggregated Bottom-Up one. It is completely depends on the problem you want to analyze. If the behavioral aspects of individuals under specific networks is the main aspect of your research problem, then ABM is the better method. But, If your problem is a policy making one such as utilities policy, governmental planning about electricity market or any other issue do not care about individual level then SD would work better. briefly, Whereas SD models assume homogeneity and perfect mixing within compartments, AB models can capture heterogeneity across individuals and in the network of interactions among them
The other big difference is ABM seeks to forecast trends base on simple rules between individuals and network shape, while SD could illuminate the structure which produce the behavior of the system and clarify the leverage points for policy making.
