It is a very similar process, particularly when it comes to qualitative research. You ask questions, collect information, evaluate it for importance, organize it, and present it to readers, using quotations to illustrate the points.
My many years of journalistic writing helped me considerably when I began academic writing.

it is really an interesting question. to be frank with you , there is no difference between investigative journalism and research. whereas the difference comes in the way you present the information.
