Hello,

I have ordinal data (4 ordered categories for each variable) that I would like to use as indicators for latent class analysis (LCA). I am aware that the cumulative response distribution can be accounted for in LCA by using model constraints. However, I cannot use Mplus for my analysis and thus I will be unable to impose such constraints.

I am considering using the poLCA package in R for my LCA, however I will then be forced to treat my ordinal variables as nominal. In their paper on poLCA in the Journal of Statistical Software, the authors of the package state that ignoring the ordering of the ordinal data, "does not usually restrict analyses in any meaningful way" (Linzer & Lewis, 2011, p. 2).

What might the consequences be for my LCA if I treat my ordinal data as nominal? Any papers that might shed light on this question would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Eddie
