Someone walked into my office and asked what she can do since she is very lazy. She said "I am very lazy". Please advice. Will love to hear what you think.
Second Thessalonians 3:6 “Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.”
Here Paul commands believers to avoid anyone “who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.” In other words, those who walk in idleness were apparently siphoning off of others who do work. This was not “in accord with the tradition that [they] received from” Paul. Paul later wrote “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat” (2 Thess 3:10). These are the people we should avoid. There are so many “get rich” schemes out there that so many get entangled in because they simply don’t want to work hard like most people do. Paul commanded believers to “do their work quietly and to earn their own living” and not support the idle ones (2 Thess 3:12b).
We can see the principle of working hard as a command from God and it is in the best interests of the one who works diligently. Jesus believed in hard work. Prior to the beginning of His earthly ministry, He was a carpenter and carpenters in those days didn’t just mean woodwork but working with large timbers and stones and all of it was manual labor and of course without the aid of any power tools so everything was done by hand. Jesus said “My Father is always working, and so am I” (John 5:17) and so must we be. We must all work so that we won’t be in hunger and we can work to help those who cannot work for themselves for various reasons. The Bible has much to say about laziness…and none of it is good.
Proverbs 16:27: Idle hands are the devil’s workshop; idle lips are his mouthpiece. They will collapse your business if you employ them. At the moment the solution for lazy people is not employment but they need change of heart and mindset before they can be employed.
Subhash I strongly disagree with you. Painters and porters are not lazy people. They are highly imaginative, creative and highly diligent persons. Visit their studio one day and observe how committed they are to their profession; you will change your perception about them.
@Prof. Subhash. Painting and poetry, generally the Arts and Social Sciences are viewed by some scholars who are shallowly informed or are not privy to the cognitive machinery required to be successful in these fields. Of course, lazy people can attempt every activity such as Business, Science and other disciplines.
But, the successes they chalk would be the metric in knowing whether they were scholarly achievers or lazy attempters. Personally, the most creative activities that require all seriousness is in the Arts and Social Sciences.
Well said my respected scholars. It looks like nothing good can come out from a lazy person hereby making them almost useless to any organization. Because even while painting they fall asleep and leave the job half way.
Painters and potters work hard to produce the well appreciated works many people use for decorating their homes and offices. No lazy person can do that.
Agree with Ofori, painters and potters are very hardworking, committed and dedicated to their works. They produce work with creative and innovative ideas, their works are also very useful to the society. What lazy people do is to sleep and eat.
There are no career options for lazy people. If he/she should even do a reality TV show, I do not think that anybody would be interested in watching a lazy person.
The bible clearly says that "if a man will not work; he shall not eat".
This is an interesting discussion. However, it seems everyone is focused on one attribute of a "lazy person". But you should know in reality most lazy people are very smart, have very good interpersonal relationship and depending the society some come from affable homes. Though a lazy person may not work on their own, they always get people to do things for them. Surprisingly "lazy people" are good bosses and entrepreneurs, they know what they want. They always get the workdone without lifting a finger or taking part in the work themselves. In school they always cut corners, cheating etc. Most importantly they get the best jobs as a result of nepotism or other factors. Some get married to very rich spouses so that they don't have to do anything. As described earlier that there is no career for a lazy person in my opinion that is idealism.
Special thanks to all contributors. Frederick, do you think a lazy person can successfully open a business and sustain the existence of that business? In my opinion and experience, becoming an entrepreneur is not an easy job. Even before employing staffs, you have to do a lot your self. From planning to achieving. It is true they can marry a rich spouse but marriage itself and raising children isn't that easy too. Can u tell us more on how they can achieve wealth as a lazy person? Will they need to learn and humble themselves?
@Flourish, I concur with you and the other contributors. No society condone laziness. But as living organism we all try to live by the principle of least effort. I believe that principle drives our hardwork and innovation to develop machines and technologies to make our lives easier. I believe a "lazy person" also have other attributes and skills. The only problem is the lack of effort to apply themselves to whatever, their doing. And also we shouldn't forget our survival instinct as humans. I believe there is no one too lazy to eat, therefore the person will definitely need to learn and humble him/herself for any career. if the "lazy person" who asked for career advice is still young and meet the physical and minimal requirements, I suggest the person enlist in the army. This I believe will help break that bad habbit.
Am loving the various contributions that most of us have made concerning this “lazy People”, but I want to know the level of laziness we talking about or are we looking at it from a general view?
Am saying so, because this person made an effort by going to look for a solution to his or her problem, which I think no lazy person would do.
if you feel you are lazy, the best option for you is to start your own business so that you dont work under anybody. by this , you can do whatever you like with your business. you can choose to go to work at 1pm and close at 1:30pm. it is in this self-owned business that you can exhibit your laziness to the maximum and nobody will penalize you.
Laziness is something that every person has to a bigger or lesser extent. Some people have it to a much, much bigger extent, though. We are used to considering it as a bad thing. However, what if it is not? What if laziness actually helps to become more successful? I bet many of you would like this approach. Actually, many lazy people achieve huge success. History gives us many vivid examples.
(1) I will not be naming the specific job or occupation. More usefully, I will describe the job profile which is the most suitable for a lazy person.
(2) There are 4 dimensions to a job, RACI. Each can be rated High (H), Medium (M), Low (L).
Responsible: Execute the work. Or, execute the work which produces the deliverable. You do the task yourself, without delegation. H-rating would mean a high focus on task execution, e.g. a bank teller's job is focused on routine tellering operations.
Accountable: Ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the deliverable or task. E.g. a Sales Manager would be accountable for his/her sales team's performance, against the company's sales KPIs.
Control: The degree of control you have on your area of work. E.g. H-rating if you have full control on your operating budget, staff resources, workload, timeline, KPIs, etc assigned to you. L-rating if you have no control - you just make do with whatever shit that is given to you, with no recourse.
Informed: The amount of pertinent information you are given to get your job done. H-rating if you are given all the pertinent information to do the job. L-rating if you are given a minimalistically elegant one-liner on your job, and you struggle to ascertain wtf needs to be done.
(3) Best job profile for a lazy person:
Responsible: Low
Accountable: Low
Control: High
Informed: High
What this means:
You are not terribly busy.
You are not answerable for anything much, if at all.
You have full control over your job, what-you-see-is-what-you-get. No struggling with budget, staff resources, workload. And best of all, you set your own KPIs.
This is the ultimate good life. La belle vie. The dream job.
That said, be careful, in a corporate haircut, you'll be at the head of the queue.
Possible job examples: Advisor; Consultant; Food Critic; Museum Curator; Prison Executioner; Auditor, Compliance Officer, Regulator (control functions)
Hi Mirrashid, am glad you have such wonderful people around you. I believe laziness is a deliberate act that is aimed at inflicting self poverty and make others uncomfortable and you have decided not to join or participate in the act by working hard.
I have long contend that the concept 'lazy' must be reexamined. 'Lazy' is not about 'attitude'. It is an option in a decision-making process.
This realisation came through as I observed the ease of how the concept 'lazy' has been used as a rationale for learning disengagement. Included for instance, 'Students are lazy'. 'Parents are lazy''
Personally, I know, when I say 'I am lazy to do something', it means that I have decided that 'I do not wish or want to do it'. Throwing 'lazy' into the statement relieve me of detailed explanation of why I do not wish to do it.
Likewise, I suspect 'lazy' as the lady in question describes herself, is not about her attitude, rather an intent to explore possibilities.
"A person is being lazy if he is able to carry out some activity that he ought to carry out, but declines to do so because of the effort involved." Keeping the definition in mind, a lazy person has career options, but then it all comes to the quality of their work.
