After reading some definitions in books and in the web, I found that catabolism is the breakdown of organic molecules to obtain energy. It is clear that metabolic pathways as glycolysis and the citric acid cicle are included. What is not clear to me is whether other processes involved in energy production could be included, such as the respiratory chain or even lithotrophy. As these processes are obviously not part of anabolism, where are they conceived in metabolism? Are they orphan processes?
