Need not check plagiarism unless more than 40 words continuously taken from previous literature. If you check the websites may save your documents and there is also opportunity that they misuse it.

Well instead of going for websites you can get the software Turnitin, which is widely used for plagiarism check in many institutes.

With any checking system for plagiarism the ability to interpret the system and its output is critical.  I have found that with Turnitin, for example, it can pick up common words that can build up with strict settings such that students undertaking a health and safety assessment for example using those words regularly along with any common regulation title can build up a score of small 1% increments. Before using any tool check its settings and limitations with care and how to interpret any output.  If using Turnitin to create an assessment be aware of what checking/unchecking each option actually means in relation to the output from the check.

A tip for a quick check which works for all types of contents, not just academic journals: When we are revising our students' assignments, I think sometimes it is quite obvious that they couldn't have written that. So what I do is take a sentence or part of a sentence, put it in quotation marks and then google it. That way, you will find the articles or book chapters where that sentence has been used. Then you look at the rest of the contents, of course. It is better to minimise the amount of words you put in quotation marks, because that only works for perfect matches - although students who plagiarise are often too lazy to change anything at all anyway.

Turnitn is useful but not foolproof.. ultimately I think that one shouldn't rely too heavily on any software,  but use your own knowledge and instincts in assessing plagiarism. There are lots of telltale signs in a paper, look at what they've cited (or what they've not), language.. consistency, knowledge level etc, which are far more important than software. Also, lets face it... it you are relying primarily on software for detection, it tells you something about your own quality of teaching and scholarship...

Turnitin is subscription based. Urkund is free through INFLIBNET center for Indian Universities.

Please avoid or Never use any free products. they have many unreasonable conditions.

Before using please go through the 'Terms & Conditions' very minutely.

Some of them have some clauses according to that your materials became the part of their repository so it will be a problem in future.

So, Always use the options "NO REPOSITORY'.

Some recommendations based on my experiences:

1. Use 'TURNITIN' if available with your institute. it is a paid product and one of the best in its class.

2. 'URKUND' is another good product. In my country it is free but only available with faculty. Check the availability and other conditions in your region.

3. Another one is 'VIPER'. It is a paid online service but good for researchers because it charges as per the word's number you want to check. just paid and got checked. so the charges are depends on the amount of the word you need to check. Its a 'TURNITIN'; you only need to pay as per you use.

KEEP IN MIND THE OPTION OF "NO REPOSITORY"

I personally use the trial version of Plagiarism Checker X. Its a desktop app so there no 'repository' issues, everything stays on my computer. It also gives me a pretty neat report of what part of the text has exactly been plagiarized, I believe it has a 150 word limit at a time; but that just means you have to run it a couple of times. In a 3000 word manuscript the only places you are going to check for plagiarism is the 1000 word introduction, discussion, conclusion, and maybe the abstract so it works well enough - especially if you are on a budget.
