Dear researcher,
The sensitivity of waveguide to applied voltage is represented as a factor to evaluate the performance of electro-optic modulator.
The difference of effective index can measure the sensitivity of waveguide. Furthermore, many researchers focus on modifying waveguide material as the main factor to increase the sensitivity of waveguide.
What about the design of waveguide to improve sensitivity to applied voltage? What about the drawbacks? Can you please give examples (references rich the knowledge for answers ):

Thank you Musab for this fundamental question! There are several figure of merrit like
1.) voltage-length product
2.) DC device tunability
3.) modulation efficiency
and especially for slot-waveguide based EO modulators:
4.) poling efficiency
5.) field confinement factor
Attached is a publication with poling efficiency and DC device tunability ("Partially slotted silicon ring resonator covered with electro-optical polymer").
In principle, the most limiting factor of slot-waveguide modulators covered with EO polymers is the EO polymer itself. The slot width and phase shifter length have an influence on the bandwidth limitation, modulation efficiency and device tunability. The slot width and the rail width have a strong impact on the field confinement factor. Please take a look to the second attached publication ("Design Optimization of Silicon-on-Insulator Slot-Waveguides for Electro-optical Modulators and Biosensors").
