I want to use a wireless sensor network to collect data from sensor nodes that are installed on animals and I am looking for the best electronic chip and the best communication protocol. I would be really grateful if anyone shares their information with me in this regard.
There is nothing called best. but you need to think about transmission range and devices cost. I think WIFI modules "ESP....." will work good in your situation. They are low cost and they have a long range (~100m). Low power usage (3.5v) with an access point located near them "specially if these node has WIMAX interface to connect to the internet" you can construct a vast distributed WSN. Finally, a PC can connect to these nodes through the Interent or the simply a LAN connection to gather data
If you want to go with FM transmitters, you need to construct a littel complex embedded system with a microcontroller in the middle "PIC or Arduino" but it will also give you the same result. However, you have to write the interference and collision detector algorithms.
For me I will stick with the first option.
