Yes, you can consider protein engineering.
it is possible to study likelihood of improvement of this enzyme which may be beneficial in fixing atmospheric nitrogen, using bioinformatics approach.

Not a viable option. Nitrogen fixation happens in nature and you can not modify enzyme outside your lab strains.
Experimental work can be done, but not applicable in real world scenario.
