In my opinion, I don't see any disadvantages with respect to deployment of renewable energy in rural communities depending on the types of renewable energy being discussed. We recently conducted a research on the benefits of solar mini-grid systems that have been deployed in selected rural areas and we found that the projects did not only yield development benefits, but adaptation and mitigation benefits were also achieved. Rather than disadvantages, we found that several barriers tend to impede the deployment of renewable energy in rural communities.
