I think there are 2 issues in the Question: 1) how people view nursing, and 2) the barriers which preclude nurses from doing their role in a high standards.

In my opinion that both of these points are linked to how much nurses are updating their knowledge by continuous reading after graduation, attending conferences, workshops, etc. Iin addition, those nurses who were able to attain higher education (PhD) have more responsibilities to expand the body of knowledge in nursing, which will lead to changes in the policies that affect nurses.

In my idea, nurses who can not do their roles perfectly face to some barriers such as:

lack of motivation, less knowledge, lack of competency, not being qualified in their field not only in knowledge but also skills.

It is an interesting topic to discuss and i think this is the high time to discuss this issue. Nurses are those who spend the whole day with the patient and provide the holistic care to the patient. But at the end of the day the credit goes to the physician and to the hospital. About knowledge, l think the current world nurses are well qualifies, a BSc nurse follows the same subjects in detail as MBBS do.  Nurses are competent to the skill and knowledge, that can be evaluated the number of publications done by nurses and the conferences organized by the nurses in every year. The main barriers are the shifts, family, patient needs, institutional needs, and the nurse  needs to fulfill variety of roles compare to any other professionals, and they are not recognized by the society.

One of the barriers could be not allowing them to be creative especially when they become experts in their field.

In my point of view there are three essential factors that influence nursing role either positively ,or negatively:

1- Organizations You know adequately that the hospitals nowadays provide limited support for the nurses to perform their role.

2- Nurses themselves: there considerable numbers of nurses have inadequate skills and knowledge to perform their role.

3-Nurse scholars: Many nursing researchers nowadays published articles that do not benefit nurse practitioners because they are about research not practice

I would say that in my experience in the US, the primary barrier for nurses adequately performing their roles is staffing.  As someone mentioned earlier, this is directly related to the misperception of nursing being a series of somewhat-technical but still fairly simple tasks that can simply be done more quickly if we are efficient with our time.  This leads to patient loads that are unsafe, leaving nurses to choose between performing thorough assessments and care or rushing through tasks that must be checked off a list and potentially making serious errors in the process.

Some facts to consider:

- The nurse is prepared to work in hospitals and clinics, and has difficulty in primary care services;

- Nursing, responsible for the direct care within 24 hours have a different system of work of other professionals;

- The entry of other profissionias in health teams helps to confuse the roles and functions; There superposition of ill-defined tasks and few effective results for the patient;

- Unfortuantely, the nurse who does care, has no stimulus to publish their achievements because the system of academic-scientific publications is very specific;

I believe that there is no one answer to this question that is applicable to the multiple geographic ares served by Researchgate. In the U.S., nurses cannot be licensed until competency is demonstrated through rigorous testing (NCLEX), so this is not an issue in this country, except in very rare circumstances where factors other than the nurse's knowledge base is involved - for example substance abuse. Here, as Dianne Verrochi states, staffing is the major issue. National and State laws are being proposed to address this issue, but many hospitals are fighting this. Additionally, ,in some states, laws do not allow nurses to practice up to their level of education and professional ability.

i think we have not obey the clinical guide line in nursing care . so every hospital or every unit care to patient as a routine manner.

i believe a major impediment is drs not knowing nurses role what are their capabilities and believing in working with them as a time.  The other barrier is nurses themselves in terms of their professionalism and updating their knowledge being confident in what they know and standing up for themselve and their colleagues

Nurses perform their job in different capacities. Barriers to nurses to perform their roles include high patient to nurse ratio that makes the nurses perform many tasks in a limited span of time. Calls for assistance, medications, quick questions, phone calls and need to make phone calls are some of the things nurses need to do.  They are pulled in dozen different directions at the same time. When there are more patients to take care of, the pressure builds up. Another barrier is the acuity of patients. Patients with high acuity need more time and attention from nurses, and other patients need to wait. The role of being a patient educator and patient advocate is crucial that no matter how busy nurses becomes, nurses should always give instructions and patient teaching during medication administration. Electronic documentation can be a barrier when the computer slows down, freeze or is out of service. Downtime can be a barrier too, because paper documentation slows down the nurses who is used to electronic medical record (EMR). On the other hand, computer literacy on the new information system can also become barriers to nurses who are starting to use electronic-based documentation. It is important that nurses are trained properly when the hospital organization shifts from paper-based to computerized EMR’s.

What can we do change attitude towards nursers and minimize barriers in nurse's job?

I agree with some comments that the barrier to nurses is often themselves in the lack of professionalism in the profession. This is not a job, it is a career choice; it is a profession. We need to be respectful in our workplaces with patients, other health care workers, and with other nurses. As well, social media plays a part in public perception of nurses and if you identify yourself as a nurse on facebook or twitter, keep it professional. How can patients respect our intelligence if we sell ourselves as sex objects?

Also I feel that there is often not a lot of support from management and other higher decision-makers. They may understand nursing and what nurses do, but money is always a consideration and giving top patient care requires time that employers are not willing to pay for. How do you quantify or schedule the time needed to discuss outcomes or social challenges patients face? Dying patients and their families often require extra time that never coincides with the time available. Nurses sell themselves short by not reporting this extra time taken that requires them to work over their shift time or to miss breaks.

If we believe and accept our roles in nursing, many barriers will be disappeared!

Nurses should have an independent identity. On the other hand , building collaborative relationships with other healthcare professionals and negotiating the role are critical to the success of the implementation of the nurses' duty and role.
