My idea is to find out the contribution of open space Urban farming to food security of the city. Modal study- along a selected water stream in the city and the result obtained is analysed with respect to the total available open spaces in the city.
Further formulate cityplanning bylaw on 'percentage of space to be left for urban farming'
Local weather , availbale resources like labor, any agri industry to absorb raw produce and demand of specific crops as per local choice are among few points which are important.
Soil quality can be a major issue when farming happens in the city because the vicinity to buildings and/or building sites may determine toxicity in the soil (e.g.: heavy metals like Cd, Hg, Pb). Also compaction high bulk density and poor water retention capacity due to erosion may be common. Finally debris such as: rocks, residues of building materials, trash. Therefore amending these soils with good compost, or vermicompost is very important prior to begin any cultivation. The availability of manure from large animals is a plus in restoring soil condition however, if these are not available or feasible to raise, small animal species such as birds (pigeons, quails, chickens) and/or mammals (rabbits, goats) could be employed to rehabilitate a soil where crops cultivation will be considered later on as the manure from these minor animal species is excellent for amending/fertilizing soils that will be used to grow edible plants.
