4. If matches, go ahead

5. Otherwise, choose another according to your match.

I agree completely with Prof Ljubomir.  I must add that to be happy and fulfilled in a career, it must be one where we will be an asset, a contributor.  A career that you will have reason to wake up each morning, looking forward to doing a fine satisfying job.

Thank you very much for all answers frankly saying till now I don't know there are many  stages or there are much care  to be taken care while choosing career which was not even their in my Education syllabus no schools and colleges teaches in India. simply I applied my resumes to companies where ever called for interview just attended if got selected joined there and made it my profession like me many are there all your answers will be useful to many like me

 I believe that since child each one shows a tendency to a future profession.

Here in Brazil are widely used the vocational tests.

I chose to do a technical course instead of the traditional high school. And it was good, I found what I really wanted to study and also the basis of the technical course helped a little in certain disciplines of engineering school.

I only disagree with the choosen based in "future earnings"  but sometimes seems to be what more is taken into account.

There might be a problem. The aspect of 'choice' (e.g., choosing a career) needs a free will, and there is research stating that a free will does not exist for humans. So, the career might well choose us.

The factor that, to my mind, matters most is job opportunity.  Next comes job aptitude.  It is extremely rare to find the opportunity for a job that exactly coincides with the ability to perform it well and even creatively.   Usually it is a case of having to adapt one´s personal fortes to the job opening out there.  Job opportunities and job aptitudes vary from place to place and from year to year. I would think twice about advising students to enter medicine in Obama´s U.S., whereas I would not have had any misgivings in Kennedy´s U.S.  

In my opinion, there are limited choices of a career in the world of today due to a global governmental decreasing tendency towards active job creation. My advice for a new career-seeker is to be both hopeful & realistic. The personal capacity may not agree exactly with the offered job (it may be higher or lower than the expectations). It is wise to seize an opportunity & not reject it at first glance because there may be no further chances for few years to come. Ideally, one will select a career which matches the qualification exactly but, in reality, this does not occur in many cases. I was qualified as an industrial applied chemist to work in a chemical industrial plant for polymers production or in a chemical engineering department. However, our country lacks real chemical industry & there was no chemical engineering in my university when I started my work in it in 1984. I simply have chosen the best third path but not the first or the second.

The choice of a career you love seems gone today. There are a few decades many people chose their career for love. But today, choosing a career is not personal but stems from the opportunity to find a job.

I agree with all the career has to be chosen with love and interest not just for money making at the same time when there is not much opportunities I feel it is  better to take up job which we get  though which may not matches the qualification exactly but in parallel one should focus on the career which is looked for

In India, many parents -if not all, pressing their choice of career on students. Up to senior secondary level, parents supress the free choice of career and development of children by imposing their directions and career preference.

It is unfortunate as the children can't pursue any career of their choice/preference.

They should remain free to choose the career option, so that they can be successful and enjoy their career life.

Dear @Prabhakar, my father forced me to study medicine in order to keep the family tradition, but I was so strong to avoid it. I went to engineering! There is still influence of the parents regarding a career, while I have not influenced any of my children!

Thank you very much for sharing your views and experience I thought only in India Parents used to force their children for choosing career but I was shocked from Dr Ljubomir Jacić  answer that the situation exist in many other countries too
