What are the applications of colloids in nematic liquid crystal gels that can be demonstrated in the lab?

Nematic LCs such as 5CB can be used for detecting various external analytes. However, the applications of colloids in nematic LC gels are not very evident. Can anyone suggest what are the simple applications that can be demonstrated in the lab scale?
