How do we decide the liquid flow configuration in case of packed bed bioreactors for waste water treatment? Which mode - up-flow or down-flow is better for biofilm development ?
Down flow is always better because system need not to work against gravity so energy saving and bio film formation is also good, upflow condition is good to clean the pressure filters but not the bio towers.
Thanks for the response Dr. Singh. But to send the water from the top to bottom of packed bed reactor, we have to send it to top first ?!
I think biofilm attachment rate is better in up-flow mode rather than down flow as up-flow prevents falling off of the biofilm. Moreover , for higher retention times, up-flow is can be used. The wet surface area should also be more in up-flow mode. But, I would like to have more information.
As has been said, Up-flow is more efficient primarily due to the fact that the effect of gravity is ambiguous - requiring more energy but also simultaneously making the separation easier.
