What are some of the variables to consider when comparing Graduate Theses/Dissertations produced before and after the implementation of a Plagiarism Checker?
I think you need to check if some text appears as an image as it starts being a trick that some students are using to contour the plagiarism detection.

I would suggest the variable of a students' concern of being identified as "cheating" students. If they are concerned less prior to an application being use versus after - then just "how much" more are they concerned; again if any at all.
I apologize - I read the question twice and thought I knew what you were asking - then when seeing others' answers, I read it a third time and realized that I "re-enineered the question in my head" to "what are student variables to check prior and after the implementation of a plagiarism application occurs."
one’s supervisor check the plagiarism report and check sentence structure , paragraphs, some text and tables are not use as an image, some students use synonyms of original words to reduce plagiarism
I go with the submission from Emmanuelle. This is becoming rampant among the smart students to simply convert texts to images which the scan cannot detect
I do have a suggestion now that I have thought this through a bit more.
Consider the students' academic success up to and/or on the thesis. Of course, this requires IRB approval that is non--exempt in most institutions since you are identifying the student and academics.
- In my opinion, this could potentially identify as referenced in a number of theories, particularly Attribution Theory,
Obviously this takes away from the idea that students potentially decrease in plagiarism when a system is implemented. My thoughts are more in the direction of the attitude of "I won't be caught, I have to succeed." - In my 25 yrs in education, I have had these students.
Apparently, there may be a considerable variation in texts written before and after the implementation of plagiarism checker. By selecting a number of texts written before the development of plagiarism detector and exposing the content to the program, one may find possible instances of violations of the ethical issues in writing. This would make a nice comparative (diachronic) study. The targeted variables , however, could be content analysis (e.g., treatment of quotations, authenticity of references, novelty of the research topic, students' attitude about cheating, etc.).
I agree with Dr. Jumoke and Dr. Emmanuelle. I'm following the discussion steadily. Yet, I think the key variable should be the means of checking the novelty of the research idea.
Thank you all for the great contributions given for this question; however, is it also appropriate to compare originality index of theses that were submitted before the introduction of turnitin and those that has been checked through the these writing process?
