I am not necessarily looking for the use of the term "affordance" outside of the study of perception-action. For instance, its use in the language literature.
I am interesting in contrasting or complementary theoretical accounts of the concept as it applies to perception-action.
I'm not sure what you mean by non-Gibsonian. Donal Norman's appropriation of the notion of affordance in 'The Design of Everyday Things' was influential, but perhaps not strictly Gibsonian. Gibson, after all, rejected cognitivism. Andy Clark's recent 'Surfing Uncertainty' adopts insights from Paul Cisek's current work on the 'affordance competition' model of action selection, which might be worth a look. Thanks for the suggestions, David. By non-Gibsonian, I mean approaches to affordances that do not fall under the purview of ecological psychology...so work that more than likely does not offer explanations of affordances that involve the detection of information that specifies them.
I believe it is biologically likely that periodically innate guidance of learning from perceptual (perceptual/attentional) "shifts" OCCURS; this is after infancy or toddler-hood AND UP TO adolescence; these are major affordances -- in a very real sense. The perceptual shifts provide new guidance to learning that are key to the development of new 'levels' of concepts (like Piaget's and neo-Piagetian's). Not only is this biologically likely, but the hypotheses are NOW empirically testable using new eye-tracking technology and computer-assisted analysis. If it is so, they will be found: just depends on WHO has the equipment to use and does a thorough job of looking -- not me I am retired (sorry). [ Admitedly, because the actual perceptual/attentional shifts have not been discovered my papers have to address the universal and dramatic EFFECTS of these, and cannot address in any detail the "shifts" themselves -- this leaves some other work (including use of imagination-of-possibilities) for YOU. ]
