In the last decade or so, there have been remarkable advances in our knowledge of various topics in soil science. It is not possible to list all of them, so I will try to list some based on what has been discussed in conferences, and what has been published in soil science journals. These include the fate and effects of antibiotics in soils; the 4 per mile initiative; clay-organic matter interactions; soil change due to anthropogenic impact; biological soil health indicators; biochar effects on soil properties; soil variability at the aggregate, soil profile, and landscape scales; use of non-invasive techniques for soil research; use of nano-fertilizers; temporal and spatial variability of soil properties; factors controlling nutrient availability in soils; the role of dust deposition on soil development; silicon dynamics in soils and ecosystems; pedometrics; pesticide transport in the soil; indicators of soil development; the genesis of technosols; the fate of heavy metals in soils; new methods of soil analysis; new methods of soil erosion research, and many others.

@ Hanuman, I think, the most recent development in soil science is the Nanofertilizers, Nano-induced polysacchride powders, nano-pesticides, Bio-nano formulations, carbon nano tubes, Nano-sensors for precision farming, Nanozeolites, Nanomembranes for purification, desalination and detoxification and so on...

As Dr Asio rightly mentioned there have been lots of progress made in soil science in recent years. People have been able to identify various microbes and their interactomes that promote plant growth, metabolism and prevent growth of plant pathogens. Soil is a sink for a number of global warming causative agents including Carbon and nitrous oxide. Soil can form a huge means of over-coming the imminent threats from global warming and nitrogen pollution.

There are several studies that show that advances in nanotechnology do not only show beneficial effects in various areas such as medicine, cosmetics, food, and beverages, etc. Various studies have shown that the deposition of nanomaterials in the soil can affect the quality and physical integrity of different types of soils. The affectations can cause a decrease of the microbial community, toxic effects in the mesofauna and macrofauna, even in superior organisms. In this sense, using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), analyzed with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), the method of acid digestion with slight modification, among others, are used to identify and characterize different nanomaterials both in the soil and in organisms.

Unsaturated soil and Suction Theory is the recent active topic in soil mechanic science.
