Magnetic NPs can be prepared by gel combustion method. We take nitrate of Metal ions with suitable fuels such as glycine, citric acid etc. Aqueous mixture is heated to give gel and finally auto ignition occurs resulting powder. My question is ..if we take citric acid as a fuel and do synthesis .. What are possible functional groups available on the surface of ferrite nanoparticles synthesized by this citrate gel combustion method? I am talking about groups on as prepared NPs where some unburn citrate may present. .

When calcination occurs gels combustion glycine and citric acid give nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. But they will not surface functional groups. Such ferrite powder is a good adsobent. It can adsorb atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide. Therefore, the powder is desirable to cool in a desiccator. In the preparation of ferrite in aqueous solutions in them can be functional groups. Thanks Yuri Mirgorod for nice reply. I am talking about un-calcined powder where chance of unburned citrate is there. Actually I am getting few peaks at 1630 and 1415 and 3400 cm-1 in ftir spectra. whether they can be due to remained citrates

I guess that many functional groups may existed after combustion, while the composition of these groups mainly depend on the ration of critic acid and nitrate salt, namely, the temperautre and atmosphere during your process will effect the compositions. in my opinion, mainly compositions may include OH、O-C=O、or C=O, et al.

The functional groups on the surface depends on the synthesis atmosphere and reaction temperature also, in my view point some of them remain same if you synthesize the material again, but in order to confirm this one needs to analyze the multiple samples synthesized in the same manner. ( Reproducible or not)
