I was recently going through a topic on colloids and I came across this topic known as Patchy Colloids. So can anyone let me know about this patchy colloid and where does this patchy colloid find use?
Patchy colloids are as the name suggests, colloids whose surface have 'patches' of different surface properties.
Patchy colloids can be formed by forming a cluster of nano particles and then swelling this cluster with a monomeric polymer before polymerising to fix the structure. The result is a colloidal particles with the properties of the added polymer, with areas on the surface with different properties where the cluster particles are still on show.
These localised forces mean that site specific bonding can take place and the use of patchy colloids for nano scale construction has been explored.
David Pine is a notable name in this area, and he has work here on Research Gate.
