I was reading about Capillary Suspensions, and I was just wondering what is the need of adding a secondary fluid to prevent particle settling when we already have dispersants that can prevent particle settling. So I wanted to know how exactly dispersants work so that I can understand the concepts of capillary suspensions better.

The dispersant coats the particles and gives them an electrical charge. After that it is just a like-charge repulsion effect from particle to particle. They have cationic, anionic and non-ionic dispersants. The non-ionic dispersants work a little differently, but they still work on repulsion of some electrical charge. It's Brownian motion that governs.
Henry Savage , does it mean that the dispersant increases the debye length? Any idea about what advantages a capillary dispersion may have over using a dispersant to prevent particle settling?
