To know the amount of material removed from a particular landslide scar as well as the material accumulated down slope we have to calculate the volume first.
First of all - You have to measure the terrain before and after landslide debris. The best way is to use high-resolutuion DEM (like LiDAR or from UAV) from these two time moments. Next step is to use i.e. ArcGIS and the tool to calculating the volume (ArcToolbox - 3d Analyst Tools - Raster surface - Cut Fill)
Basically you can use the following three methods to estimate the landslide volume (both zones of depletion and accumulation). Though, DEMs before and after failure are required, but not essential always.
1. Cut and fill method when you have both pre- and post-landslide DEMs.
