I agree with most colleagues here that being up to date is one of the most important qualities of an academician --and one that it is increasingly demanding, given the massive literature produced in most fields. As for the specific role of educator, I think it needs special qualities. Among them I would mention passion for teaching, the ability to see things from the point of view of the students and, of course, the skills to plan adequately the learning process.

Never loose touch with whom you serve.They will  guide your research whether they are university students, people you meet in you consultancy, community service etc. Stay focused on your priorities.

An academician needs to be updated with the recent research activities in their expertise area. 

They should be the role model for the students. The students should aspire and get inspired by the Professor.

Must have the knowledge of Statistics in order to do better research work.

Must have the knowledge on the new technology that enables students learning.

Must have knowledge on softwares/programming that help in data analysis.

Provide inspiration for students to study and work hard.

I must admit this is still the view from the outside as I have only engaged students one on one except as an overall motivator at the start of an academic session.

However, i think that the list is pretty short and dovetails to the person taking on this onerous task to make sure one does it diligently. One thus needs to focus on one primary and at most two secondary qualities from the following:

1. Humility, Patience and Self Discipline: Being self aware is key

2. Agility and Insight: Always helps in tricky situations

3. Situational Analysis and Response(Agility): Understanding students' changing needs while conducting classroom sessions

4. Engagement: Again, even here if your primary quality includes self discipline, you just need expertise in your subject area and not necessarily make it a primary metric ( Self metric vis a vis survey metric where this becomes key)

5. Ideation and Active research

6. Technology Infrastructure readiness: Can include ability to prepare and conduct MOOCs but primarily it is for your classroom learning engagements, where the Lecture has become an outdated technique given the advances in many areas.

7. Knowledge management: Inclusive of Written notes and ready solutions, Subject area refreshers, References for further reading and opportunities for analysis to aid classroom learning

8. Work discipline: you cannot be late to class, postpone evaluations or avoid tougher areas in class (unless you are out of time)

9. SAE/SME: You have to know what you are teaching.

10. Classroom infrastructure: Even in the most basic poor schools, you need a few key things to make the class a place for learning. It helps if your classrooms reflect modern decor, teaching aids and material comfort

Our greatest challenge is a much broader question. A requirement to be relevant is a challenging ask in itself but to be relevant and entertaining at the same time is probably required for effective engagement.Student results need to reflect your effort

It must be a person with good knowledge that are not disconnected "from real life".

He must be able to provide students the proper knowledge structure in a field.

He must be resistant to various assessment criteria, which often have nothing to do with the quality of teaching.

TOTALLY agree with Josef. Staying in touch with the field is extremely important. In some field sharing a 10 year old article is impractical and counterproductive. The world is changing. We are more global for one.

To me, open-mindedness is the utmost quality of any educator, it whatever the field.

Also, updated information and communication skills, that derive from open-mindedness, should be considered.

When we talk regarding the academician the feather type of knowledge is certainly representing his knowledge & his progressive achievement .He has to keep the utmost interest in the academy career for the students & he has also to find out the interest & inclination of the student so that they may move towards their desire end.

With this his performing not only his fruitful Deity but also to pass the moral obligation for the members of the society .

This is my personal opinion 

I would just point out to one, namely not believing that he or she knows already everything. When that happens, she or he stops learning, and hence growing up.

There are three principal objects of teaching: the subject, the method and the students to be taught. The late Madeline Hunter compared teaching to surgery, “where you think fast on your feet and do the best you can with the information you have. You must be very skilled, very knowledgeable, and exquisitely well trained, because neither the teacher nor the surgeon can say, “Everybody sit still until I figure out what in the heck we're gonna do next."

I think the typical case in Malaysia is that professionalism is suppressed due to rise in multi-tasking. This actually makes us stray away from our core duties - Teaching/Educating. I personally feel people nowadays work only to fulfill KPIs which is good but at the same time makes one become greedy and reduces the quality of your work. I believe an academician in the current era requires :

An academician must be very honest to his profession.He must be highly knowledgeable fellow with adequate exposure to outside world.In addition to various other skills required in teaching profession, now a days he is also required to have sound administrativve skills also.

Teaching is demanding in a variety of ways, which include time, effort, and commitment.
