I've reading alot (I mean alot) but most variables are the same like gender, socio-economic status, culture, environment... What be other alternatives aside from the aforementioned?
Try something more logical, like the career of parent or whether a parent ever went to college. (I.e. did the student have a role model?)

Perceptions towards science depends on various factors like culture, upbringing, friend circle, good habits like reading, exposure to technology, surroundings, your educational institutions, your teachers, parents and so on !
Some variables I can think of:
- Socio-economic background
- Early life exposure to science
- Access to information
- Student skill in accessing information with available technologies - (this can be inproved by training)
- Health issues
- Personal ambition (a person with clear set goals is much more likely to achieve)
- Badges
- Science topic
- Similar topics
- Biological Science
- Physiology
- Physiological Processes
- Stress
