In recent times incidents have occurred as a result of a collapse of telecom masts which has resulted in loss of lives and properties worth billions of naira. Especially in places like Lagos, Delta, Calabar and Kano are but few to mention. Why do these locations favor these facilities and again tend to have adverse effect on the environment? What other factors influence these facilities or are responsible for locating these facilities? All views, ideas, critiques and opinions are welcome.
Population density, Telecom Density (existing and potential) and current service network are the most important factors for the location of telecommunication facilities. The hazards with the facilities are known to telecom companies and governments, but if you have to choose services there is compromise the participants do to locate the service towers. There regulations which can restrict the height of building, or structure, or health impacts which can allow or disallow the telecom towers in certain locality. The telecom companies needs to be given public spaces which are safe as regards to health hazards as we do with electricity towers. Such safe zones can be demarcated in the cites, for erecting the towers. Wireless telecommunication is reality for now, and only way out can be to avoid the negative health impacts. With cheap land deals, property rentals and low service cost the telecos are attracted to properties owned by the private individuals, which often get induced by high earning and risks there health. Its responsibility of the telecos and local body to work in tandum to correct the situation in the cities.
