what are different modes of operation for renewable energy sources connected to DC bus with different loads? and are theses different if connected to Ac bus or AC grid? or both?
We use renewable energy solar resources in rural village energization trigeneration and smart microgrid systems. The biggest challenge is the fact that RE harvest energy on an intermittent basis.
If I understand your question on modes of operation correctly, best way is to harvest RE with RES fullout when it is available and to store as much as possible. The DC bus and AC microgrid then dispatch the energy using intelligent type demand supply and selected load shedding if required. We used three level microgrid control levels in automation. To the fullest use of renewable energy sources, especially where there is access to a national energy system, it is good to turn any form of available energy into electricity.
If the conversion is done in DC electricity, finally we have only one inverter, if the conversion of each source is AC will take several inverters, given that consumption is in AC current.
For storing the intermittent energy produced DC is used for transmission ot distribution AC is used. It is basically a compromise between what renewable resources you have for generation and where your load centers are.
