ZnO is an excellent electron transport layer in Organic photovoltaic devices. It is used in the form of compact or nanostructured layers deposited on top of an FTO (fluorinated tin oxide) cathode to facilitate elecrtron extraction from the device. The choice of ZnO is due to its high n-type conductivity and appropriate energy lavels (conduction band minimum at about 4.o eV). 

For the same reason, ZnO layers are used as electron transportes in quantum dot photovoltaic cells.

The bi-layer structure of i-ZnO and aluminum (Al) doped ZnO, act as a transparent front-contact for  thin film solar cell. i-ZnO thin film acts as an insulating layer, which prevents the recombination of the photo-generated carries and also minimizes the lattice miss match defects between CdS and Al-ZnO in Cds/CIGS thin film solar cell.

In the field of solar cells, Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films have caught the attention for its use as a window layer because of its low cost and wide availability of its constituent raw materials compared to ITO.
