Scientific Communication (the way [we] communicate with each other via publications, presentations etc.) and Professional Development (training / formal-informal education activities etc.) form a significant part of what we do. Our appraisals often feature our publications and professional engagement, but IMO, there is a very limited amount of research in these areas. This is especially notable when we look at closely related areas such as science communication or higher/formative education.

  • Trying to track down specialist centres for these areas is difficult, and a good starting point is to see where people feel they fit, and also to determine whether they consider them to be cross/multi/trans disciplinary.

My specialist area of interest involves the conference setting, which using the industries own figures consumes anywhere between $22-$155 billion USD worldwide each year. Given such a massive investment of time, effort and financial resources, I am puzzled why the area seems to have generated so little research interest.

Any information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
