We all aware of bottled water available all over the globe.In this area I am collecting data or any other media about its awareness. In the pharmaceutical industry product rules from the FDA are very tight as are the calculated limits for AET and thresholds on the base of Maximum Daily doses. But I cannot find such document on water leachability. I again want to make clear that my aim is not to make water costly by adding this type of additional mandatory analysis/pre causation, but to keep people aware so they reduce the use of plastic water bottles and if possible use steel or metal containers.
If I understand your question, then you are asking what regulations apply to bottled water which can have its quality affected by leaching from the packaging. In the United States, bottled waters must meet the same standards as drinking water. The standards are set by the USEPA and regulate organic, inorganic, radionuclides, and microbial contaminants. Bottled water must also meet an FDA regulation of "truth in labeling" meaning if the bottle says it is spring water, then the water must actual come from a spring and not a river, etc. There are no specific regulations pertaining to leaching of contaminants from the bottle. If the leached materials cause a taste or odor, then they could e assessed under USEPA aesthetic guidlines, although these are not enforceable.
In France, we had the recent issue of Bisphenol A (an endocrine disruptor) being leached from baby bottles made from polycarbonate, and the massive switchover back to glass to manufacture such bottles. But I imagine any kind of plastic will leach more or less identified molecules whose toxicity is also more or less known. Glass also leaches silicates and a whole range of metals. We know this from so-called "trace-metal clean techniques" that are used by oceanographers handling open ocean microalgae that are very sensitive to metals.
